Fire Management Details
Kobuk Valley has a primarily boreal forest ecosystem susceptible to forest fires. There have been substantial forest fires within park lands since the 1940s and as a result the park has been combined with other protected lands in the region to form the Northwest Arctic Parklands fire protection district. Since the park is located in Alaska's interior it has a larger chance of experiencing forest fires than its coastal neighbors. Kobuk's ecosystems primarily alternate between boreal forest and tundra based on proximity to the Kobuk River. Visitors to the park should be cognizant of fire risk whenever using fire in the backcountry. Fires should be completely extinguished when finished and fires should be placed on durable surfaces with little surrounding vegetation. Contact park authorities if any sign of a forest fire is present.
