Verdant Cove Details

Verdant Cove is located in the southwest part of Aialik Bay. In the cove there are two privately owned properties, which limits where you can land. There is also high wave energy on the northern side, behind Verdant Island, so steer clear of that area with kayaks. The best camping in the cove is on the southeastern beach, particularly the southern end. The food locker is on the eastern end of this beach. If you are paddling between Aialik Bay and Northwestern Fjord, this cove is at the end of a stretch with very little in the way of good campsites, so plan accordingly. Do not use the dead standing trees behind the beach for firewood - these are 'ghost forests' killed by the 1964 earthquake when the land they stand on dropped several feet. The ocean water rose, submerging their roots and preserving, or essentially pickling, the trees.
