Mountaineering Details

Mountaineering at Kenai Fjord is centered on the Harding Icefield. The best time of year to mountaineer on the icefield is April, when you'll enjoy longer days and warmer weather while still having snow to travel on. The most popular route is from Tustemena Glacier or Chernof Glacier to Exit Glacier. A traverse on this magnitude typically takes from six days to two weeks, and requires great preparation and skill to complete. It may be possible to snowshoe on the icefield without attempting a traverse; however, much of the same precautions should be taken. Those who wishing to travel on the icefield must be experienced in glacial travel and be expert on skis or snowshoes. Travelers should be roped together when moving on the icefield because of the risk of crevasses. Some necessary gear that mountaineers must bring includes a shovel, climbing gear, maps, compass, four-season tent, a stove and fuel, and expedition clothing. It is encouraged, but not required, to check in with park rangers before traveling on the icefield, and rangers can provide vital, up-to-date information on mountaineering.
