Kayaking Details
Kenai Fjords National Park is best explored by kayak. You can paddle to quiet coves, tucked-away beaches, tidewater glaciers, and among bobbing blue icebergs. It is a surreal seascape not paralleled by many places in the world, with the dramatic walls of the fjords soaring up from the water. However, this is not a place for beginner paddlers as the Gulf of Alaska, with its unpredictable weather, strong surf and powerful currents, feeds directly into park waters, and there are very few protected areas. If you want to kayak, whether for a day or a week, consider going with a local guide whose familiarity with the climate, tides, wildlife, and terrain here will go a long way in managing your risks. It is possible to go paddling directly from Seward, and this can be a great jumping off point for day trips in Resurrection Bay or overnights to Caines Head or Bear Glacier, but rounding Aialik Cape can be treacherous and is not recommended in a kayak.
