Harding Icefield Details
The Harding Icefield is an expansive icefield partially located within Kenai Fjords National Park. The base of the icefield covers a total of 300 square miles covering all land to the Kenai Mountains, though if you include the more than 32 glaciers spawned by the icefield the total size is closer to 1,100 square miles. Named after U.S. President Warren Harding after he visited Seward, Alaska, the Harding Icefield is one of only four remaining icefields in the United States. The first documented crossing of the icefield wasn't until 1968 by a group of 10 mountaineers, who used Exit Glacier to come down from the icefield -- thus giving the glacier its name. The icefield is viewable by taking the Harding Icefield Trail to a viewing area along Exit Glacier; few visitors venture out onto the icefield, which is a technically challenging place to hike and climb.
