Backcountry Information Details

The park's 600,000 acres is almost entirely made up of rugged and wild backcountry. Over 700 square miles are covered by the Harding Icefield, the birthing ground for more than 30 glaciers. The land in the park that is not covered by ice is dramatic: steep canyons, dynamic rivers, and rocky shoreline. Most backcountry visitors travel by kayak and camp along the fjords. A relative handful tackle the inland backcountry, including some who trek cross the icefield. The backcountry of Kenai Fjords is not a place for beginners, but rather an incredible, nearly pristine challenge for seasoned backcountry travelers. Be sure to leave your trip plans and estimated return time with someone at home, be prepared for harsh and unpredictable weather, carry a marine radio to stay informed of conditions, practice Leave No Trace outdoor ethics, and actively manage safety risks associated with your activity. Consider hiring a local guide if you would like to spend time in the park's backcountry. If you are camping overnight in the backcountry you are encouraged to register with park officials. Registration allows the park to both gather information from visitors and provide information to visitors. This step is required for commercial or guided groups. If you are just staying at the campground or in a cabin, you should not register. You can register at the park's information center (in Seward's small boat harbor), the Exit Glacier Nature Center, with a water taxi, with an outfitter or guide service, or at the Islands & Ocean Visitor Center in Homer.
