Paddling Details

With nearly 500 miles of coastline and hundreds more miles of inland rivers, streams and lakes, Katmai National Park is a paddlers dream. You can launch at Lake Camp on Naknak Lake, just outside King Salmon (you can drive from King Salmon to the boat launch). From Naknak Lake you can access Brooks Camp, Fure's Cabin, Bay of Islands, Iliuk's Arm, as well as the famous Savonoski Loop. Also popular are American Creek, Funnel Creek and Moraine Creek, with something for both whitewater enthusiasts and flat water boaters. To access these routes you'll have to charter a float plane to fly into the park's interior. For a saltier journey, you can charter a boat to Katmai's Pacific coastline, where endless fjords, islands, clam-flats, and sandy beaches wait to be explored. The coastline can be an excellent place for wildlife viewing, especially during the first months of summer, before the salmon run brings the bear population inland.
