Pacific Coast Details
The Pacific coast of Katmai National Park is a wonderland of fjords, coves, islands, and beaches (both sandy and rocky). Many people start their coastal paddling journey from Kodiak Island, just east of the mainland. From there, you have your pick of dozens of inlets and cove to explore: Devil's Cove, Kukak Bay, Geographic Harbor, and Hallow Bay are just a few examples. Katmai Wilderness Lodge and Hallo Bay Wilderness Camps are two lodging options for those who prefer not to tent camp for their whole journey. You can explore and camp on the islands off Katmai's coast. The options are practically limitless. As with any backcountry trip, be prepared and be safe. Since you will likely be relying on a charter plane or boat to pick you up at the end of your trip, bring extra food in case poor weather delays the transportation. Also, read up on bear behavior and safety, as you will almost certainly come across a brown bear or two. One of the park's only stands of Sitka Spruce is on the Pacific coast, as are a wide variety of sea birds like mergansers and gulls. Many of the park's large wildlife also congregate around the coast as it contains several different habitats and a wide variety of sustenance. You'll probably see porpoises, whales, seals, and sea otters - and yes, bears! When the salmon aren't running the park's brown bears flock to the coast where they feed on clams and sedges.
