IIiuk Arm Details

The Illiuk Arm is a branch of Naknek Lake, located southeast of the main lake, roughly adjacent to Lake Brooks and Brooks Falls. You can get to the Illiuk Arm via Lake Camp boat launch, on Naknek Lake's western shore. The Savonoksi River empties into the Illiuk Arm, so most people visit this section of lake during the final leg of the Savonoski Loop. If you are seeking a shorter trip, the Illiuk Arm is a great place to camp. The journey from the mouth of the Savonoski River to Brooks Camp is roughly 20 miles, or two to three days. Rangers recommend sticking to the southern shores, as the lake is bordered by Mount La Groce on the north, and the cliffs on the Illiuk side are steep and jagged. Be aware of fierce southeastern winds that can pick up out of nowhere. Once in the Illiuk Arm you can visit the abandoned village of Old Savonoski, one of hundreds of archaeological sites of prehistoric Eskimo camps and dwellings.
