Hunting and Trapping Details
Hunting is allowed only in the Katmai National Preserve, not in the national park. The preserve is located in the northeastern region of the park and managed cooperatively by the National Parks Service and Alaska Department of Fish and Game. You need an Alaska State hunting license to hunt here, and are required to follow state regulations for hunting season dates and bag and possession, each of which varies by region and by species. Make sure that you are up-to-date on these regulations before heading out. Also, familiarize yourself with the private property in the area. Several private parcels of land are within the preserve and you must ask permission of the landowner before trespassing or hunting on the property. Rangers advise hunters to file a trip plan before leaving, so that they will be able to assist you in case of an emergency.
