Hallo Bay Details
Separated from Afognak Island by the ever-foggy Shelikof Strait, and ringed by glacier-covered volcanoes, Hallo Bay has an air of mystery and allure that has attracted paddlers and wildlife enthusiasts for decades. The crescent shaped bay is seven miles long, with a wide sandy beach and long expanses of salt marshes. Fields of sedge (a nutrient-rich grass) grow here. A wide array of wildlife also roams here, flourishing on sedge and clams hidden in nearby mudflats. Hallo Bay is a top bear viewing destination, as well as a place to see moose, fox, and wolves. You will find a wilderness camp here, with the option of taking a guided tour of the bay. During the summer (April through October) camping is prohibited on the central sedge meadows along the bay. Sedge is a main food sources for bears so the camping ban helps to mitigate conflict between bears and human visitors. If you wish to camp at Hallo Bay, do so several miles from the shore, steering clear of the sedge grass.
