Mount Katmai Details
When Novarupta erupted in 1912, it spewed so much lava that the summit of nearby Mount Katma imploded as magma drained from underneath it. Today the caldera (or hole) where the summit used to be is filled with water. The high-alpine lake is an impressive sight, with the reflections of dozens of other volcanic peaks shimmering on its surface. You can hike here via the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes or if you want to hike in from the coast, via Katmai Pass. The caldera rim is at roughly 7,600 feet, while the surface of the crater lake is around 4,200 feet.
