Fure's Cabin Details
In 1919, a fur trapper named Roy Fure built a cabin on the banks of the North Arm of Naknek Lake. He came to Alaska from Lithuania in 1912 for work as a handyman and at a cannery. He spent several years “commuting” to Naknek Lake on skis in the winter and by boat in the summer to work his traps. He ultimately moved into the cabin with his wife Fanny, their two children, and four children from a previous marriage. Fure lived in the cabin until his death in 1962. Today, the cabin is an architectural and historical landmark, recognized for its incredible craftsmanship and its exemplification of the lifestyle of a non-native Katmai trapper in the early 1900s. The cabin was rebuilt in the 1980s, using as much of the original lumber as possible, and is now open for public use. Reserve (way ahead of time) for up to four consecutive nights in the cabin. The rate is $45 per night, for a maximum of six people. The cabin is located on the shore of Naknek Lake in the Bay of Islands, along the route of the Savonoski Loop. You can access it by boat.
