American Creek Details
This 40-mile long river is perfect for more experience paddlers looking for a journey that combines epic scenery with some technical sections. A typical American Creek trip begins at Hammersly Lake, north of Grosvenor Lake, and ends at Lake Cosville. The class of the river changes as water levels change (higher water or flood conditions often means bigger waves and a more challenging paddle). There are two particularly difficult sections, one Class II-III+ section in the upper canyon and a lower section with bigger, but less technical waves. There is a trail on the right side of the river that you can use to portage around the upper canyon section. Groups usually take seven to ten days to run the river. Besides paddling, American Creek is also famous for its Rainbow Trout and Arctic Char, a big draw for anglers. The river is braided, which means that there are tons of pockets and channels where fish like to hide. This is a backcountry location, which means that you'll need to take extra safety precautions. Bring extra food in case poor weather delays your charter flight, and file a trip itinerary with the park rangers. Alert a friend back home where you are so that if you are more than a few days late they can call the parks service and initiate a rescue mission.
