Off Trail Hiking Details

Most of the park is rugged wilderness, undisturbed by maintained hiking trails. If you are an adventurous (and well-prepared) hiker, you can enjoy a remote Alaskan backcountry experience by hiking into the backcountry with nearly unlimited freedom. However, the moist, mild climate results in extremely dense vegetation in many areas, so off-trail hikers often stick to beaches, recently de-glaciated areas, and alpine meadows to avoid bushwhacking through thick groves of alder and willow. Sitka alder grows densely along beach and stream edges, avalanche chutes, and across mountain slopes, and can create quite an obstacle course. Plan ahead and leave ample time for crawling through these dense thickets if you want to venture inland. Off-trail hikers must be completely self-sufficient, and experience with backcountry hiking and route-finding is vital. As with any hike in the park, be alert for bear and moose and leave your plans with someone at home. Wear and carry appropriate gear for the weather conditions and duration of your trip. The climate is wet and cool, so carry lots of extra layers, adequate rain gear, and warm boots and clothing. Be sure your equipment, including tent and sleeping gear, is waterproof and can withstand highly changeable conditions, including the chance of high winds or snow. Carry enough food and cooking fuel to last longer than your planned trip in case the conditions you encounter, such as high river levels or inclement weather, prolong your return. Consider carrying a GPS for navigation and a satellite phone or emergency beacon in remote areas.
