History Details
People have been accessing the park's resources for over 13,000 years. The first visitors were nomadic hunters and gatherers. Eventually some eskimos set down roots; you'll find a Nunamuit village called Anaktuvuk Pass inside the park. Wilderness advocate Robert Marshall is partially responsible for naming the park. During his frequent trips to North Fork Koyukuk country between 1929 and 1939, he designated Frigid Crags and Boreal Mountain as the "gates" from Brooks Range to the far north Arctic. In 1980, Gates to the Arctic was named a national park, all 8.4 million acres of it. Its protected status means that visitors must adhere to practices put in place to maintain the park's wild and undeveloped landscape. Natural features here include black-spruce forests, boreal forests of spruce, aspen and birch, mountain ranges, alder thickets, tussets, rivers and streams. Today, park biologists work alongside scientists investigating park ecosystems to provide managers and rangers with important information that will help them maintain these vital resources over time.
