Hiking and Backpacking Details
While there are no established trails, the hiking here is ripe with gorgeous views. You'll encounter mountains, dense vegetation, boggy ground and tussocks, as well as frequent stream and river crossings. The easiest walking can be found above the tree line or in the stream beds when the water is low, typically in summer or fall. Trekking poles are helpful in navigating uneven terrain. Grab a compass and a [map of the park](https://www.nps.gov/gaar/planyourvisit/maps.htm) before setting out and plan for at least two routes in case one ends up being inaccessible. Bring a few days worth of extra food and water. And be sure to leave as small a mark on the landscape as possible - when hiking in a group, walk in a fan formation so as not to create a trail.
