Grizzly and black bears live in the park and visitors should [take precautions](https://www.nps.gov/gaar/planyourvisit/bearsafety.htm) to avoid encounters. Precautions include looking for tracks and droppings, refraining from making loud noises and protecting food in bear-resistant containers. What are approved bear-resistant food containers and where can I get them? Bear-resistant food containers must be made of a solid non-pliable material that is able to withstand 300 pounds of force. Park visitors can pick up approved containers free of charge from any visitor or ranger center. How bad are the bugs? Mosquitos, while most prevalent in July, are in the park throughout summer and fall. Visitors should bring protection including head nets, bug coats, long pants and bug repellant. What is the weather going to be like? You must be prepared for all types of weather and bring extra food and supplies in case you aren't able to exit the park on your planned date. Rain or melting snow could cause rivers to rise, meaning water crossings could be impossible. Sub-arctic winter temperatures see frozen grounds and temps as low as -50.
