Ambler Mining District Details
The Ambler Mining District, to the west of the park, contains rich mineral deposits such as copper, zinc, lead and gold. The Ambler Mining District Industrial Access Project seeks to create a 200-mile-long road between the mining district and the Dalton Highway to aid in mine construction and to allow transportation of mineral products. Although the park's upper Kobuk River is considered a preserve, Congress agreed to let the access road be built across it due to the positive impact mineral development could have on the area. The project is still under review as project teams investigate all potential outcomes and community impact.
