Wilderness Permit Information Details
Free wilderness camping permits are available at the Backcountry Information Center (BIC), which is adjacent to the Wilderness Access Center. The BIC is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily during the summer. Permits must be obtained in person, and the permitting process takes about an hour, so arrive early. Permits may be obtained up to one day before your planned trip. The permitting process includes: * Planning your itinerary, including choosing which of Denali's 87 backcountry units you want to visit (visitation to each is limited on a daily basis, and popular units fill up quickly). Note: Some units may occasional be closed for various reasons, such as increased wildlife activity. * Watching a mandatory safety video. * Attending a safety talk, where you'll get your free bear-proof food container. * Mapping your campsite to ensure that it's in the approved backcountry unit. * Obtaining bus tickets (typically on the Camper Bus) so you can get to your chosen trailhead.
