The Denali Wilderness Details
Comprising about one-third of Denali National Park and Preserve, the subarctic Denali Wilderness covers 2.1 million acres. That includes most of the area that was originally Mt. McKinley National Park prior to the park's expansion and renaming in 1980. Mt. McKinley and much of the park's high-elevation Alaska Range lands fall in the Wilderness. The federal wilderness designation means that this part of the park enjoys extra protection from development and is limited to non-mechanized recreation, although the Denali Park Road (with its buses, bikes, and occasional passenger cars) does pass right through the park's wilderness area.
