Teklanika River Details
A tributary of the Nenana River, the Teklanika River -- more widely known as the Tek River -- has its headwaters near the Cantwell Glacier. The river drains a large portion of Denali National Park that's most familiar to visitors, who cross over the river (at mile 31) when traveling on the Denali Park Road. Fans of the book "Into the Wild" may recall that this was the river that prevented Christopher McCandless from going for help while trying to winter alone in the Alaskan wilderness; he later died of starvation. The oldest archaeological site in Denali, called the Teklanika River site, is located along this river and has been dated to more than 7,000 years ago. The river also is a major draw for park wildlife -- look for grizzly bears, moose and caribou along the river banks.
