Park Road Tours Details

Narrated bus tours, operated by park concessionaires, are a popular alternative to using Denali's park shuttles to get around and see the sights along Denali Park Road. The air-conditioned, tan-colored motor coaches are a far cry from the park's own converted school buses, and unlike the shuttles they are staffed by a trained naturalist/narrator. Of course, you also pay more for these tours than you would for a shuttle ride. Four different daily tours are offered, generally from late spring through the end of summer: **The Denali Natural History Tour:** This approximately five-hour tour covers both the park's natural wonders and its human history. It begins at the Wilderness Access Center with a viewing of the film, "Across Time and Tundra," followed by stops at the Savage Cabin and a drive out to Primrose Ridge at mile 17 of the park road. An Alaskan Native presentation at Primrose Ridge is the penultimate event before the return trip. $70.75 adults/$25.00 children 15 and under. **The Tundra Wilderness Tour:** This tour itinerary is nearly as old as the park itself, a 7- to 8-hour drive out to Toklat River or even beyond the 53-mile mark. The narrator will explain the park's history and also point out wildlife and photo opportunities. (In spring and fall, a shorter version called the **Teklanika Tundra Wilderness Tour** is sometimes offered; it goes as far as the Teklanika River rest stop (mile 30 of the park road). $120.75 adults/$60.50 children 15 and under **The Kantishna Experience: **Traveling the entire length of the 92-mile park road, this tour leaves early in the morning from the Wilderness Access Center for the old gold-mining town of Kantishna -- literally the end of the road. A Park Ranger will join the onboard narrator to explain the history of Kantishna and point out park attractions. The 11-12 hour tour includes time to explore Kantishna. $165.00 adults/$82.50 children 15 and under **Windows Into Wilderness Tour:** The newest Denali bus tour travels to mile 30 of the park road, with a stop for a 3/4-mile guided hike on the Mountain Vista Trail at mile 12 and a presentation on the Dena'ina subsistence lifestyle still followed by many local Athabascan people. $101.75 adults/$51.00 children 15 and under Pickups from local hotels are available; see the [Denali Park Village](http://www.denaliparkvillage.com/) website for full tour details.
