Off-Trail Hiking Details

Denali National Park has relatively few marked trails, especially in comparison to its vast area. As a result -- and partly thanks to its damage-resistant tundra terrain -- off-trail hiking is more common here than at most national parks, even in non-backcountry areas. Denali's wide-open landscapes make it possible to strike out across the tundra toward a distant goal -- mountain, lake, etc. -- without undue fear of getting lost. That said, hiking off-trail in Denali requires some prudent advanced preparation. First, you should always tell someone where you are heading and when you expect to return. If possible, hike with at least three people in bear country (which is almost everywhere in Denali). You'll need a water filtration/purification system or be sure to carry plenty of potable water with you before you depart (Denali has several filling stations you can use to top off your water bottles). As for food, avoid carrying anything scented, smoked or spiced in order to avoid attracting bears. Weather in Denali is unpredictable at any time of year, so be sure to dress in layers of non-absorbant clothing and bring along rain gear, a hat, and gloves. Wear study hiking boots and bring extra socks and gaiters in case you get wet (stream crossing are common in Denali's open country). Other packing essentials include: * a compass (adjust declination from magnetic north to true north, as much as 10 degrees, 7 minutes east) * a map * waterproof matches * a knife * a whistle * bear spray * insect repellant and head net Never leave food unattended, and pack our all trash including toilet paper and feminine hygiene products, double-wrapped in plastic.
