Healy Details
Healy, Alaska is more than the mailing address for Denali National Park: it's also home to numerous other parks, hotels, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, outfitters, a brewery, and even has a few tourist attractions of its own. The historic coal-mining town (you can visit the still-operating Usibelli Coal Mine) is located 11 miles north of the park entrance on the George Parks Highway, making it the closest community outside the park borders. Apart from its proximity to Denali, the town of Healy's biggest claim to fame is that it's where the Stampede Trail meets the Parks Highway: this rough road into the Alaskan backcountry is a occasionally used backdoor into Denali National Park and also where Chris McCandless of "Into the Wild" fame made his ill-fated attempt to overwinter alone in the wilderness. Visitors can take ATV tours of the road.
