Discovery Hikes Details
Most Ranger-led National Park "hikes" are relatively tame; Denali's Discovery Hikes are the wild exception. Limited to 11 participants, these daily guided summer hikes can cover a wide variety of off-trail terrain to "adventurous and well-prepared" visitors, some of it quite challenging. Hikes are rated moderate to strenuous, and layered clothing, good shoes and adequate water are musts. There are two hikes offered each day from June 8 to mid-September. The so-called "Disco" hikes are free, but you must sign up in advance, a day or two ahead and in person at the Wilderness Access Center (WAC). Hikers also must be prepared for a bus trip of one to four hours each way, and hiking for three to five hours. The hiker bus loads at 7:45 a.m. and leaves at 8 a.m. from the WAC.
