The Old Man of Coniston Details

Often referred to as the Coniston Old Man or just "The Old Man," this 2,634-foot (803 meter) fell stands just west of the village of Coniston and the Coniston Water lake. Part of the Furness fells, the Old Man was extensively mined for slate, and evidence of mining activity (along with a population of friendly sheep) can be seen while walking the many routes to the summit. A quarry road leads to a parking lot at 740 feet (230 meters) -- a popular starting point for those who want to follow the road (closed to vehicles) the rest of the way to the summit. You can also walk to the top of the Old Man right from Coniston village via Church Beck, a route that will take you right through areas where slate (and before that, copper) were mined.
