Quaker Tapestry Museum Details
Journey through the Quaker influence on the modern world: explore the industrial revolution, developments in science and medicine, astronomy, the abolition of slavery, social reform, and ecology; and delight in the detail of the stunning needlework and the craftsmanship involved in its creation. The 77 vibrant embroidered panels were made by 4,000 men, women and children from 15 countries between 1981 and 1996. Often compared with the Bayeux Tapestry, this masterpiece of storytelling is a celebration of life, people and events across the centuries. A myriad of stories are revealed from within the 77 captivating and colourful embroidery panels. Informative audio guides narrate the stories with lots of added information about each panel. As an accredited museum, the location provides great insight into Quaker History by adding to, protecting, and presenting, an extensive collection of associated artefacts alongside the panels of embroidery. Around 500 articles of clothing, embroidery and other domestic items have been gifted by a wide range of donors, both Quaker and non-Quaker, from Cumbria and further afield.
