Mirehouse Historic House Details
Built in 1666 by the 8th Earl of Derby, Mirehouse is a beautiful example of a country manor house, nestled into large grounds. The house has been enlarged over time, beginning with the matching bays built in 1790. The present owner's father arrived at the house in 1961 and since then has restored much of both the structure and the contents of the home. It remains a family home, although the ground floor has been open for public tours since 1981. Visitors will can tour the hall, the dining room, the drawing room, the library, the music room and little drawing room, the school room and the nursery, where children are encouraged to play with the dolls, try some of the games and ride the resident rocking horse. Other than the period furniture and portraits found among the rooms, be on the lookout for a display of manuscripts, including former owner James Spedding's collection of Francis Bacon's works, as well as letters from Wordsworth, Tennyson, Southey, Thomas Carlyle and John Constable. The grounds around the house are also open for exploration, holding four woodland playgrounds for kids, a heather path maze (suitable for wheelchairs), as well as a family nature trail and the expansive Mirehouse Wood. Opening date is April 1st.
