Whinlatter Forest Details
Whinlatter and its Visitor Centre is a great place for walking and mountain biking with unrivalled views across Bassenthwaite Lake, Derwentwater and Keswick and many miles of gravel roads, surfaced paths and tracks to explore. Each junction is marked with a numbered post which is shown on the guide map making it easy to create your own route. GoApe Adventures offers Tree Top Adventure in a true mountain forest, with 5 sections and reaching 14 metres at its highest point. Forest Segways are now also available at Whinlatter and are a great way to explore the forest. Whinlatter is home to a wealth of wildlife that enjoy the shelter provided by its trees, the nearby waters of Bassenthwaite Lake and the open heathland habitats of the Lakeland Fells. The forest is home to roe deer, badgers, foxes, crossbills and siskins whilst the fells are the hunting ground for buzzards and merlin. Whinlatter is a red squirrel reserve. If you walk quietly you may see a red squirrel anywhere in Whinlatter. The fish of nearby Bassenthwaite Lake are the favourite food of Ospreys which nest nearby each year (between April and end of August) and can be seen live from the open air viewpoints at Dodd Wood or from the nest camera here at the Whinlatter Visitor Centre.
