Driving Directions Details
There are too many roads to count in and around Lake District National Park, so getting here by car is no problem. London, to the southeast, is a drive of about five hours; it takes somewhere in the neighbourhood of 2 hours from York or Glasgow and its airport and 90 minutes from Manchester and its airport. To the east of the Lake District National Park you'll find the M6 motorway. If you're on the M6 heading north, take Junction 36 and follow A590 to access the southern and western Lake District and the A591 for the south east and central Lake District. For the northern and eastern Lake District, take Junction 40 and use either the A66 or A592. The A roads have good surfaces but can be curvy and steep once you're in the hills, so allow for extra time to travel from point to point, especially if you're unfamiliar with the route. The B and C roads can be narrow but often take you to some of the quieter, less congested and more intimate parts of the National Park. During high season parking can be a challenge in many honeypot areas, so allow for extra time to find a spot in one of the car parks during busy times.
