Blackwell Historic House Details

Completed in 1900 and designed by famous architect MH Baillie-Scott, Blackwell Historic House was built as a country retreat for wealthy Manchester industrialist Sir Edward Holt. The house is a perfect example of the Arts & Crafts style fashionable at the time, and the stunning interior has been preserved mostly intact. The house was rarely used by the Holt family after the death of their oldest son in World War I, and they eventually leased the house without modernizing it. During the second World War, students from Huyton College in Liverpool were evacuated to the house, which was used as a school until it closed in 1976. Used subsequently as offices, the house was finally acquired by the Lakelands Arts Trust in 1999 and both it and the gardens were fully restored by September 2001. Today the house hosts art exhibitions and displays, as well as tours of the period rooms each Friday. There are also art workshops for both adults and children, as well as lectures on the house and its history and restoration. The house is open daily at 10:30 a.m. and admission is £8.50 ($12.32).
