Ambleside Roman Fort Details
Sitting on the shores of Lake Windermere, the remains of the 2nd-century Ambleside Roman fort are well marked. Likely built during the rule of Emporer Hadrian, it's thought that the fort guarded the Roman road from Brougham to Ravenglass, as well as functioning as a supply base. Covering three acres, the site contains the foundations of the headquarters building, commandant's house, granaries, gates and defenses, which were all exposed by excavations between 1914 and 1920. These early 20th-century excavations also suggested the presence of an earlier wooden fort underneath the stone buildings, possibly constructed in the 90s AD when Romans were first exerting control over the Lake District. The fort is about 1/2-mile south of Ambleside. Entry is free and the site is open during daylight hours.
