Trees and Plants Details
Though the island of St. John is small, Virgin Islands National Park holds an amazing diversity of plant life -- more than 800 species call the island home. On the interior hills you'll find lush subtropical forests, while on southern slopes you find less rain and a scrubland that's semi-arid and dotted with cacti. On rocky and wind-battered points you'll find cactus and lower-growing trees and shrubs. Many shorelines contain mangroves, and you can find three varieties: red, black, and white. At one time, 90 percent of St. John's native vegetation was stripped away to make room for cash crops like sugar cane, tobacco, and cotton, or to establish pasture land for grazing livestock; looking at the island today it's difficult to imagine it denuded.
