Catherineberg Sugar Mill Details
St. John was an island dominated by the sugar industry, and the ruins at Catherineberg are spectacular examples of a sugar mill operation -- if you can get there. The ruins are accessible only by Highway 206, or John's Head Road, a 4x4 road connecting North Shore Road with Centerline Road. John's Head Road can be quite rugged, and subject to frequent washouts, thus the legitimate need for a high-clearance vehicle (fortunately, it's easy to rent a Jeep on St. John). The fastest and shortest way in is to head north on John's Head Road from Centerline Road, a drive of only a few hundred yards. The ruins are seldom visited, which means you will have plenty of time to explore and photograph. You will find the sugar mill of particular interest as its size is staggering, though other structures -- like the windmill tower -- are also notable.
