Caneel Hill Trail Details
This 2.4-mile, point-to-point trail connects Cruz Bay with Highway 10/North Shore Road, topping out at Caneel Hill (719 feet) and Margaret Hill (848 feet) along the way. The views from either peak on this trail makes the hike worth the effort, as the panoramic pictures you can capture here are remarkable. The trail begins a few hundred yards from the Visitors Center and gradually ascends for the first 0.25 miles; then it grows steep until you reach the top of Caneel Hill. As you descend then ascend the saddle between slopes, prepare for the biggest view yet from Margaret Hill. Many linger here to catch their breath and take pictures. From Margaret Hill the descent is steep, so be careful on the trail. As a point-to-point hike, Caneel Hill Trail starts in one place and ends in another, leaving you with three options: arrange for a car at the finishing point to carry you back; hike to one end then turn around and go back; or hike to one of the peaks and turn back the way you came. Budgeting 90 minutes of hiking time for a one-way trip is a bare minimum, and if you do the whole hike then return, allow four hours for a challenging 4.8 mile journey.
