Tunnel Mountain Scenic Drive Details
A short drive just outside of the Town of Banff is big on highlights. Though the Tunnel Mountain Scenic Drive is short (just 9 kilometers, or 5.6 miles) and slow-moving (hikers and bicyclists use the drive, too, to reach trails), it's chock-full of highlights. From the intersection of Banff Avenue and Buffalo Street, follow Buffalo Street until it turns into Tunnel Mountain Drive. Nearly immediately, the view opens at Surprise Corner on the right hand side to overlook the Bow River and iconic Banff Springs Hotel. Continuing along, the drive meets up with Tunnel Mountain Road and views of Mount Rundle and again, the Bow Valley below. Continue following around until you meet back up with Banff Avenue in downtown Banff. But before you do, take advantage of any of the numerous picnic spots feature terrific vantage points over the Town of Banff below, and hoodoos, or unique rock formations that resemble towers of rocks, that can be found along the roadside.
