The 24-kilometer (15-mile) Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive through Banff National Park travels along alpine lakes found in the Canadian Rockies. In addition to its spectacular scenery, there's history along this drive, too: remains of an old booming coal mining town, Bankhead, are also found along the way. Admission to the Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive is free of charge with Banff National Park admission. Additional highlights of the scenic drive, starting in the Town of Banff (head north on Banff Avenue, under the TransCanada Highway to start the drive) include Cascade Ponds, Johnson Lake, Two Jack Lake and, the drive's namesake, Lake Minnewanka. Stop the car and have a picnic, or stretch your legs at any of these stops along the route, the first of which is Cascade Ponds. Parking, restrooms and picnic tables are accessible along the drive, as is a cafe for a bite to eat at Lake Minnewanka. Take your time on the scenic drive - you can spend as little as an hour, or even a full day, admiring the beauty along the way.
