Internment Camp Details
An internment camp, known as Castle Camp, was build in 1915 at the base of Castle Mountain in Banff National Park. Canada entered WWI in August 1914 to fight against Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey and Bulgaria. At the same time, more than half-a-million people from these countries were living throughout Canada, having been invited to the country to work on the railroads, and in forestry, agriculture and mining. When the depression of 1913 hit, a large number of these immigrants found themselves out of work. As the war raged on and Canadian citizens became afraid of civil unrest, the government instituted the War Measures Act wherein immigrants were required to register and report monthly. Those immigrants who failed to report or tried to leave Canada without permission were imprisoned in internment camps. One of 24 internment camps throughout Canada at the time was built in Banff, and can still be seen today. The camp is about one-third up the Bow Valley Parkway from where it begins in Lake Louise.
