A short path from the parking area will easily deliver you to the lookout platform so that you can take in the views before continuing your drive along the Bow Valley Parkway. In 1858, James Hector, a geologist on the Palliser Expedition, mapped the mountain and made it half way to the top. The first documented ascent of Castle Mountain was in 1883 by Arthur P. Coleman, a Toronto University geology professor. He camped in the valley before making the climb, noting "the wonderful view of the valley of Bow River four thousand feet below was quite worth seeing". For Coleman, "A high mountain is always a seduction. Stop at the pull out to see for yourself.
