Backpacking Details
Hoisting your backpack and getting away from the crowds is one of the best ways to experience Banff National Park. Though the backcountry is accessible year-round for adventuring, the main hiking season in this area tends to be May through October, when the weather's warmer and drier. If you're going to venture into the backcountry, a backcountry permit and campground reservations are required if you plan to overnight; fees do apply, and they're in addition to the park entry fees. You should book your trip in advance to ensure you are able to find a campsite and get a permit. You can call the park at Lake Louise (403.522.1264) or Banff (403.762.1556) to make the necessary reservations, or visit the Banff National Park Visitor Centre in person. If you plan on making the trip in the summer, you should know that July and August are the high season and demand is high-so call ahead! To help with planning, Parks Canada has created [suggested itineraries](http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/ab/banff/activ/randonee-backpacking/itineraire-itinerary.aspx) for backpacking into the backcountry, ranging from two-day trips to four days and longer.
