Chokoloskee, Fla. Details
Chokoloskee is located near Everglades City and is actually a small island located in Chokoloskee Bay. The town is home to about 400 permanent residents. Like Everglades City, Chokoloskee started off as a very small farming town; it was settled by European immigrants in the 1870s, though it was home to the Calusa tribe long before that. Chokoloskee eventually became the trade center for homesteaders scattered throughout the 10,000 Islands region. There are a few options for fishing and kayaking charters in Chokoloskee for those looking to get out on the water. Still standing is the Smallwood Store, an old trading post (first established in 1902) that served as a place to swap hides, furs, and produce in exchange for the manufactured goods. In 1974, the store was placed on the National Register of Historic Places; when the doors were shut, 90 percent of the original goods remained in the store. In 1990, the store reopened as a museum, and today it serves as a time capsule of Florida pioneer history. Chokoloskee is also home to Chokoloskee Island Park, which has a marina and store, as well as the Havana Cafe, a great place to sample some home-cooked Cuban food. Drive four miles north to Everglades City if you want more dining and lodging options.
