Waynesboro, Va. Details
Waynesboro, Va., named for American Revolutionary War General Anthony Wayne, is today a city of 21,006. The city's rich history stems from its convenient location just six miles from Jarmans Gap, a major crossing in the rugged Blue Ridge Mountains dating back to before the Civil War. The geography of the area continued to be a boon for Waynesboro, which gained the nickname the "Iron Cross" from the junction of two railroad lines just outside town. Today, Waynesboro serves as the southern gateway to Shenandoah National Park and a convenient jumping-off point for visitors entering the park from the south, with plenty of dining and accommodations ranging from budget hotels to boutique inns.
