Mill Prong-Rapidan Camp Details
Rapidan Camp was the summer home for President Herbert Hoover during his time in office. The Mill Prong Trail leads to this historic structure, but the building is only open to visitors during ranger-led programs. To get there from the Milam Gap trailhead (mile 52.8), go left on the Appalachian Trail south and cross Skyline Drive, turning left onto the blue-blazed Mill Prong Trail. At the intersection with the Mill Prong Horse Trail, take a right and follow this trail to the Rapidan Camp. After exploring the camp, built in 1929, retrace your steps back to the trailhead. The hike is four miles roundtrip. President Hoover chose this spot for his retreat because of its proximity to the Rapidan River, a clear, cool mountain stream that provides great habitat for eastern brook trout. It was the perfect spot for Hoover to relax and enjoy his favorite sport: fly fishing.
