Goat Rock Trail Details
The 1.1-mile one-way Goat Rock Trail begins from the North Mountain Overlook. Take the short hike below the overlook and stay right, paying attention to spot novaculite stones strewn along the trail. Novaculite is a dense white-to-grayish/black sedimentary rock, made of microcrystalline quartz. The stone bars that cross the trail here prevent erosion, but they're also a tripping hazard, so hikers should watch their footing. Below the second curve, the lower side of the trail opens into glades that offer great vistas of Indian Mountain and eastern Hot Springs. After this, the trail becomes uneven and rocky, so again, watch your footing. After another several hundred feet hikers will pass beneath huge novaculite boulders and Goat Rock Overlook 40 feet overhead; a trail sign here indicates the stairway to the overlook. Stone steps rise 240 feet to the summit of the rock, which offers spectacular views of Indian Mountain. Return down the stairs and take a right to continue on the trail, which descends along a winding path to the Gulpha Gorge Trail junction. Here, hikers may take the left path to Gulpha Gorge Campground, .8 miles away, or the right path up the mountain via Gulpha Gorge Trail.
