The tiny town of Olancha, Calif., sits to the west of Death Valley National Park and is known primarily as the junction where Highway 190 -- the "main street" of the national park -- meets Highway 395. Located in California's Owens Valley, Olancha sits next to Owens Lake, sucked mostly dry in the early 20th century by the Los Angeles Aqueduct. A onetime silver mining center, Olancha has a few motels and eateries and a gas station for travelers. The 12,132-foot Olancha Peak provides the backdrop to this dusty desert town.
