Indian Bar Trail Details

Fields of wildflowers, the sight of umpteen cascading waterfalls, and views of majestic Mount Rainier make this one of the more popular trails in the park. The serene setting and fabulous views will make you wish you could stay for days, but plan at least one night even if you think you can complete this hike in a day. To access the trailhead, either take Stevens Canyon Road east 11 miles from the Longmire-Paradise Road to the Box Canyon Overlook, or else drive 10 miles west on Stevens Canyon Road from the Stevens Canyon Entrance. Look for the gravel Wonderland Trail across the street from the parking area. The route takes you through stunning wildflower meadows and offers superb views of Mount Rainier as well as the opportunity to spot mountain goats. The Indian Bar campground is nestled in a basin with the Ohanapecosh River flowing right through it. From Box Canyon, hike northeast on the trail, passing through Nickel Creek Camp in 1 mile. After another 2 miles, turn left (north) and continue following the Wonderland Trail for another 4.6 miles following along the top of a ridge until it eventually drops down into the basin. Here, you'll find a stone structure that serves as the group camping site, and what is said to be one of the top backcountry toilets in the park. Trail stats: 15.2 miles; 2,900 feet of vertical gain; 2 days.
