Cleghorn Lakes Wilderness Area Details
Twenty miles north of Joshua Tree National Park is the Cleghorn Lakes Wilderness, a little over 39,000 acres of wilderness area administered by the Bureau of Land Management. Named for the dry lakes found near its center, this wilderness area offers everything from mountains in the east to a wide alluvial slope, or bajada, in the west. Elevations range from 1,400 feet on the desert floor to the Bullion Mountains, which rise to more than 4,100 feet. The Bullion Mountains are home to desert bighorn sheep, while desert tortoises make their home on the valley floor. Area fauna include barrel cactus gardens and smoke trees; there are also occasional spring wildflower displays. The area is open for camping and hiking, but camping is limited to 14 days at the same site. After that period, campers must relocate at least 25 miles from previous site. To help preserve the area, please park your vehicle or set up camp in previously disturbed sites. Gathering wood for campfires is permitted in some areas, but is limited to dead and down materials. Visitors can access the wilderness area via Amboy Road from either I-40 or State Highway 62.
