Black Eagle Mine Road Details
Beginning at the same point as Old Dale Road, Black Eagle Mine Road heads east along the southern edge of the Pinto Basin. It starts 6.5 miles north of Cottonwood Visitor Center and dead-ends just east of the park's eastern boundary, on Bureau of Land Management land. Along the way the road crosses several dry washes and winds through canyons in the Eagle Mountains. The first nine miles are within the park boundary, making for an 18-mile round trip; beyond that point is BLM land, as well as a few old mines such as Mission Sweet Mine and Rainbow's End Mine. Drivers should be sure to stay on established roads, and should only attempt the trip with a high-clearance 4-wheel-drive vehicle as the road is quite rocky in some points. If you experience a breakdown, it may be some time before another car passes, so carry extra water, oil and radiator hoses for your car. Bikes are welcome in Joshua Tree on any road open to vehicles, including backcountry roads.
