Stoneman Bridge Details
If you want to raft the Merced River, this is where you put your boat in for the trip down to Sentinel Beach. The pretty bridge, arching 20 feet above the river, has been appearing in tourist photos since it was built in 1932. The bridge also has a unique role in National Park history. On the Fourth of July in 1970, a violent confrontation erupted between Vietnam War protestors and Park Rangers who were concerned that the young people were damaging Park meadows. This incident led to restrictions on the number of daily visitors to the Park and better law enforcement training for Rangers.
